The stairs down change the register completely, because above is London at its most London and below is cool granite and white marble, warmed with honey gold oak and dove grey Portland stone, behind screens of Asian inspired latticework that break the light into something soft before it reaches anyone. Sixty square metres of it, lit low from a wall of vertical panels, with water falling steadily down a granite wall at one end. That water is the only sound in the room and it does the job a view does elsewhere, so the missing daylight stops mattering within about a minute. Loungers run along the panel wall, the water is an even 1.2 metres the whole way across, and the room is windowless on purpose, because a windowless room in Mayfair is a room that London cannot get into.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat surrounds it is small, and that is the design rather than a shortfall.
