It is still the only Aman Spa in Britain, which makes this the single address in the country where that particular quality of stillness can be booked by the hour rather than flown to.

The verdict

The Connaught is a red brick Mayfair landmark with flags over the door and an Edwardian lobby, and none of that prepares anybody for what is underneath it. The stairs down change the register completely, because above is London at its most London and below is cool granite and white marble, warmed with honey gold oak and dove grey Portland stone, behind screens of Asian inspired latticework that break the light into something soft before it reaches anyone. The Indonesian designer Jaya Pratomo Ibrahim did the interiors, and the room he made is quiet in the way that only gets there by design rather than by hope.

The pool is what people remember. Sixty square metres of it, lit low from a wall of vertical panels, with water falling steadily down a granite wall at one end. That water is the only sound in the room and it does the job a view does elsewhere, so the missing daylight stops mattering within about a minute. Loungers run along the panel wall, the water is an even 1.2 metres the whole way across, and the room is windowless on purpose, because a windowless room in Mayfair is a room that London cannot get into.

What surrounds it is small, and that is the design rather than a shortfall. Five treatment rooms, each low lit, each with its own dressing area and shower, and one steam room carrying essential oils in the air. Anybody arriving hoping for a thermal circuit will find there is nothing to circuit, because Aman built its name on the treatment itself and on the manner of the person giving it, so the money and the hours here have gone into the table rather than the tiling.

Every treatment opens with a mineral rich foot ritual, which Aman calls an act of humble service and which turns out to be a small ceremony that makes a person stop before anything else can begin. After that comes a holistic consultation and a herbal infusion and a room the street simply does not reach.

The water

Sixty square metres, an even 1.2 metres deep, deck level so nobody dives, open 7.00am to 9.00pm every day. There is no lifeguard in attendance and the pool area is watched by camera instead, and showering before and after is a condition rather than a suggestion. Children swim between 9.00am and 11.00am and again between 3.00pm and 5.00pm, and not otherwise, which leaves the room adult company for most of its day.

The steam room sits alongside, warm and aromatic, with towels kept on inside and robes worn everywhere else. That is the sum of the thermal experience, as there is no sauna, no hammam, no ice, no experience showers and nothing outdoors. Small, warm, quiet and entirely honest about what it is.

Access to both comes with any treatment of 1 hour 30 minutes or more, for the two hours before it starts, so the way to use this spa properly is to book something long and then turn up early enough to waste the time beautifully.

Treatments

The Aman signature menu runs in three formations, Grounding, Purifying and Nourishing, and the same three exist at every Aman Spa in the world. Grounding is the Tibetan one, a Ku Nye full body massage with cupping along the meridian lines, acupressure and a head massage that pulls everything down into the pillow, and it is aimed at exhaustion, jet lag and the inability to switch off. Purifying works through lymphatic drainage and nerve point therapy at a pressure noticeably lower than a normal massage, for bloating, heaviness and the flatness that follows illness. Nourishing brings marma point therapy and sound healing, and it is the one written for grief, chronic fatigue and feeling disconnected from everything.

Each formation offers a massage, a body polish and wrap, a face ritual, and a Journey that puts all three together across three hours for £550. The Adaptogenic Muscle Release is exclusive to The Connaught and works with reishi, chaga and lion's mane inside a Japanese opening and closing ceremony, while the CBD massage uses reflexology body mapping and the house oil blend.

Beyond the Aman menu the spa reaches a long way into results driven work, from Cellcosmet's Swiss cellular facials and QMS collagen treatments through iS Clinical's Fire and Ice to the full HydraFacial range, including a scalp treatment aimed at hair growth. There are cranio sacral therapists and osteopaths, a reiki master, and sports and clinical remedial massage that begins with a postural assessment and ends with a rehabilitation plan. Mothers to be are looked after from twelve weeks, with a two hour Nurture Experience built around whatever the pregnancy is actually doing rather than a fixed sequence. The spa states plainly that it draws no distinction between male and female therapists and invites any preference at booking, which is a graceful way to handle a question people are often shy of asking.

Treatments can also be given upstairs in a suite for a £50 surcharge, which is a very Connaught solution to the problem of not wanting to leave the room, and there is a Gong Fu Cha tea ceremony at £320 a head for two or more, ninety minutes with a practitioner who spent two decades with tea in China, after which everybody goes home with a caddie.

Getting in

Anyone can book here, with no membership, no bedroom and no introduction, which is worth saying out loud because several of the addresses either side of it want one of the three. Treatments run 9.00am to 9.00pm daily, bookings sit on the hotel's own site, and the spa answers on +44 (0)20 3147 7305.

What a treatment buys beyond itself depends on how long it is. Ninety minutes or more brings two hours of the pool and steam room beforehand, and the least expensive route in on the June 2026 list is the ninety minute Body Polish and Wrap at £280. Anything shorter is the treatment on its own, so a thirty minute Hydra Express facial at £120 does not come with a swim. The fitness centre stays closed to day guests altogether and belongs to hotel residents and members, and membership itself runs monthly, quarterly or annually with personal training, guest passes and a treatment discount folded into it.

A credit card holds the booking, twenty four hours notice moves it, and inside that window it cannot be moved at all. Arrive fifteen minutes early for the infusion and the consultation. Robes and slippers are provided, phones stay on silent, alcohol and vapes stay upstairs, and no treatment is given to anyone under eighteen.

The spa is below the lobby and reached from inside the hotel, and while The Connaught states that it has wheelchair access and asks to be told in advance what anybody needs, the spa's own arrangements are not set out in detail, so a call ahead is the way to have it planned properly. Bond Street station is five minutes on foot and Heathrow around forty five minutes by car.

What to know before you fall in love

The thermal side is deliberately light. One steam room, one pool, and no sauna, hammam, cold plunge or experience showers, so this is a treatment led spa rather than a wet circuit to spend a day moving around.

The pool and steam room come with a treatment of 1 hour 30 minutes or more, for the two hours before it starts, so a shorter booking is the treatment and nothing else. The fitness centre stays with hotel residents and members either way.

It is below ground and windowless by design, which is exactly the point for some people and exactly the wrong thing for others.

Five treatment rooms make it small, and the spa asks for appointments to be booked in advance, so the couples room in particular wants planning.

No treatments are offered under eighteen, and children may swim only during the published family friendly hours, so this is not a family spa day.

Best for

Couples, who get a room with two tables and a city that disappears for two hours. Anyone travelling alone who would like to be looked after without being talked at. Visitors from abroad who already know what the word Aman means and want it in London. And anybody planning a single treatment worth building an afternoon around, rather than a day spent moving between hot rooms.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0864/5217/5189/files/pexels-photo-6545346_43b8096d-41fa-47b8-abb5-4e38060f4064.jpg?v=1786774450
