Leg School still runs its 1994 method: Ischia clay, then a hot and cold circuit built for circulation, not relaxation.

The one thing

Leg School still begins the way it did in 1994, with a clay drawn from the volcanic island of Ischia and infused with twenty six medical plants, worked into the legs before a contrast hydrotherapy circuit carries a guest between a warm water channel and a cold one. The late Professor Francesco Canonaco developed the method as a specialist circulation treatment, and decades on it remains the spa's defining idea, the thing people still travel to Anacapri specifically to have done.

The verdict

Jumeirah Capri Palace sits above Anacapri, the quieter of Capri's two main villages, reached by a winding garden path up from Piazza Vittoria. The hotel itself dates from 1960 and is built in the style of an eighteenth century Neapolitan palazzo, whitewashed and filled with enough art, including pieces by Keith Haring, Giorgio de Chirico and Arnaldo Pomodoro, that it has earned itself the nickname the white museum among people who know it well.

The spa, Capri Medical Spa, carries its own separate history. It traded for decades as Capri Beauty Farm, built around Professor Canonaco's circulation work and drawing European aristocracy and film names to Anacapri for treatment rather than simple relaxation. Jumeirah took over the hotel in 2020 and kept the method intact while expanding what sits around it, and the spa is now directed by Dr Chantal Sciuto, a dermatologist and researcher in regenerative aesthetic medicine, whose own BeautyCouture protocol and a wider programme of growth factor and bioactive treatments sit alongside Leg School rather than replacing it.

That continuity matters more here than at most hotel spas, because Leg School is not a marketing name for an ordinary leg massage. It is a specific, repeatable clinical sequence, and the fact that Jumeirah now also offers a version of it at the Burj Al Arab in Dubai says something about how seriously the group takes the original Capri method rather than diminishing what happens here.

Dining carries its own weight too. L'Olivo holds two Michelin stars under chef Andrea Migliaccio, and Il Riccio, the hotel's own clifftop beach club beside the Blue Grotto, has drawn its own attention for a Dior collaboration on the island each summer. Both sit a short distance from the spa itself, so a day built around treatment here rarely feels like it is missing anything else Capri is known for.

The water

The spa's own water lives mostly indoors, in a soaking pool built around an indoor outdoor hydrotherapy circuit, with a hot tub and a steam room completing the thermal side. Outside, a sea facing garden pool, its floor tiled in turquoise with mother of pearl inlay, gives the hotel's own guests a second, more social body of water to use.

The real water story belongs to the treatment itself. Leg School's own circuit moves a guest between a warm water channel at around thirty eight degrees and a cold one at around eighteen, walked rather than swum, ten brisk passes back and forth designed to work on circulation directly rather than simply to relax. It is a different kind of water experience from the usual plunge pool and sauna pairing, built for a purpose rather than for pure sensation, though the sensation, by most accounts, arrives anyway.

Treatments

Ten treatment rooms carry out the daily work, including couples rooms and some outdoor treatment areas, and Leg School remains the spa's own headline booking. The treatment runs in three stages, the Ischia clay applied to the legs, a cold medicated bandage wrap, and then the hot and cold walking circuit, aimed specifically at venous and lymphatic circulation rather than general relaxation.

Beyond Leg School, the spa runs a wider menu across massage, facials, Ayurvedic treatments, reflexology and thalassotherapy, using product houses including Biologique Recherche, Valmont and Sarah Chapman, with GROUND Wellbeing added for the 2025 season to address menopause, gut health, sleep and burnout specifically. Dr Sciuto's own regenerative work, using growth factors, exosomes and bioactive technologies, runs alongside the more traditional menu for guests who want a more clinical edge to their visit, which is very much in keeping with a spa that has spent thirty years building its reputation on method rather than mood.

Getting in

A stay at Jumeirah Capri Palace is the simplest way into the spa, with treatments booked once a room is confirmed. The hotel also runs a package pairing spa treatments with personal training sessions, available through the current season.

Naples is the usual way in, with a hydrofoil crossing to Capri taking around forty to fifty minutes and a further transfer up to Anacapri from the port. The hotel closes over the winter and reopens each spring, having come back for the current season on the sixteenth of April, so the exact closing and reopening dates for your own trip are worth checking directly with the hotel.

What to know before you fall in love

Leg School is a specific clinical treatment built around circulation rather than a generic leg massage, so this suits a guest wanting a genuinely purposeful treatment more than someone after an unstructured, purely relaxing afternoon.

The hotel closes over the winter and reopens each spring, so the exact dates for your own trip are worth checking directly before you travel.

The most straightforward way into the spa is by booking a stay at the hotel itself, since no separate day spa route was found, so this suits a longer visit rather than a single afternoon.

Minimum age policies for the spa and pool vary a little between the sources that describe them, so families travelling with teenagers are better off confirming directly with the hotel before booking.

Best for

This suits a guest who wants their spa time to do something measurable, drawn to Leg School's long clinical history and its roots in Professor Canonaco's own original method, and anyone who would rather spend a Capri stay somewhere quieter than the main town, with two Michelin starred dining and a clifftop beach club close enough to fill the rest of the day.
