The one thing

The real draw at La Residencia has never been the spa. It is Deia itself, the village that drew the poet Robert Graves to make his home here for fifty years, and the hotel's own standing as an olive estate hung with its permanent art collection. People choose La Residencia for the setting and the sustained excellence of the whole stay, not because the treatment rooms do anything nobody else does.

The verdict

La Residencia occupies two manor houses dating back to the seventeenth century, set on an olive estate on the Tramuntana mountainside above Deia and facing the Mediterranean. The hotel has operated here since 1984, and under Belmond it carries Two Michelin Keys, a credential judged by Michelin's own inspectors rather than handed out for marketing. It holds a genuine permanent art collection and stages garden theatre and exhibitions, with a separate three bedroom villa on the estate for anyone wanting a little more privacy within the same grounds. The spa itself, by contrast, is conventional for a hotel at this level, with six treatment rooms, a heated pool, a sauna, a steam room and an ice bath, a traditional circuit rather than an extensive hammam or hydrotherapy journey. That is not a flaw so much as a fact worth knowing before you book, since the pull here is the village, the art and the estate rather than an ambitious wet circuit. A 2026 guest review noted the spa pool could use some attention, and the hotel's own reply confirmed renovation work is planned for next year, which speaks well of a property that answers its guests rather than ignoring them. For anyone who wants Deia, a genuine art collection and a long established name done properly, this is an easy recommendation. For anyone chasing an elaborate thermal journey or a beachfront base, it is the wrong one.

The water

The wet circuit sits inside and around the main house, built on an indoor heated pool for swimming and a separate outdoor jacuzzi that looks out over the hotel's own olive trees, a quietly lovely spot to sit with the mountains behind you. A sauna and a steam room cover the heat side of the circuit, and an ice bath gives a cold finish. This reads as a well kept, traditional spa circuit built around the indoor pool, outdoor jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and ice bath, rather than an extensive multi room journey with a hammam or separate hydrotherapy pool, and it suits a stay built around treatments and the grounds rather than an afternoon spent moving between different heat experiences.

Treatments

Six treatment rooms include three with their own outdoor terraces and a dedicated couples suite. Products come from Natura Bisse, 111SKIN and Margaret Dabbs London, and the house signature is the Olive Activator, a body brushing and warm olive oil massage made with oil pressed from the estate's own trees and finished with an olive and lemon sorbet. Citrus Siesta pairs an olive oil exfoliation with a citrus oil massage, and Island Delight is a signature facial built around a jasmine mask and a rose tinted lip balm. For anyone wanting something more targeted, the spa also offers specialist treatments using LYMA cold laser and Rifetech technology with a named therapist, alongside the more traditional massage and facial menu.

Getting in

The hotel sits roughly 40 to 45 minutes' drive from Palma de Mallorca airport on mountain roads, and the nearest cove, Cala Deia, is about a ten minute walk rather than a direct stroll from your room. Spa access is not limited to hotel guests, since non residents can buy day, week or month passes covering the pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, gym and ice bath, booked in advance with card details taken at the time. Spa hours run daily from ten in the morning to seven at night, with the hair spa open Tuesday to Saturday on a slightly shorter day. The hotel itself is reported, by a single source, as seasonal, open roughly from March to November. El Olivo, the hotel's fine dining restaurant in a seventeenth century olive mill, is listed in the 2026 Michelin Guide to Spain but does not currently hold a star, a Bib Gourmand or a Plate distinction, so anyone booking dinner on the strength of an older review should know that has changed.

What to know before you fall in love

The spa circuit here is genuinely conventional for a hotel of this standing, with six rooms and a standard sauna, steam room and ice bath rather than an extensive thermal journey, so come for the estate and the treatments rather than an ambitious water circuit. A 2026 guest review flagged the spa pool as needing attention, and the hotel has confirmed renovation is planned for next year, which is worth knowing if a flawless pool matters to your stay. The hotel is reported as seasonal, open roughly March to November, so a winter visit needs checking first. The nearest cove, Cala Deia, is a ten minute walk from the property rather than a direct stroll from the room.

Best for

This suits couples and honeymooners who want the seclusion of an artists' village alongside a genuine art collection and literary history, rather than a beach resort with a spa attached, and it suits repeat luxury travellers who value a long sustained reputation over novelty. Families travelling in the May to September peak season are well looked after too, with a supervised Smile Club for children aged four to twelve. It is a poorer fit for anyone wanting an elaborate thermal circuit, direct beach access, or a property open all year round.

Before you book: open to non residents through day, week or month passes bought in advance, rather than a standing walk in rate
