The one thing

An infinity edge pool sits inside its own landscape inspired Spa Garden here, and the water runs straight to the tree line with nothing to break the view, while a two Michelin starred culinary director now leads six dining outlets across the wider estate.

The verdict

Rockliffe sits on the River Tees near Darlington, rebranded in 2026 from Rockliffe Hall alongside a wider renovation that pulled room numbers back to forty three and won the estate its AA Five Red Stars again in July. The spa itself runs to fifty thousand square feet, built around a twenty metre indoor pool, a separate indoor hydropool and, outside in its own Spa Garden, an infinity edge pool that gives the whole space its quiet, considered feel.

A fresh investment in the thermal suite through 2026 added an igloo and an infrared sauna to the existing circuit, along with further experience showers, salt inhalation in the Caldarium and a cold drench bucket shower set outside by the hot tub. Eleven treatment rooms carry the spa menu, built around comfort zone and NEOM alongside the estate's own signature rituals. Dining across the wider estate is now led by James Close, a two Michelin starred chef appointed culinary director across six outlets including the new ATLAS restaurant, so a spa day here increasingly comes with a genuinely serious table attached.

The one place families need to read carefully is the pool. The hydropool, the heat rooms and the Spa Garden are sixteen and over throughout, and the main pool itself only opens to children in two set daily windows, in the morning and again in the afternoon, running adults only the rest of the day.

The water

The twenty metre indoor pool is the anchor of the circuit, with a separate indoor hydropool alongside it for a different kind of warmth. Outside, the infinity edge pool in the Spa Garden is the point of difference, set into a landscape designed around light, water and the surrounding grounds rather than tiled to the edge of a terrace.

The 2026 investment in the thermal suite brought in an igloo and an infrared sauna, and added experience showers, salt inhalation in the Caldarium and a cold drench bucket shower positioned outside by the hot tub, giving the circuit a genuinely varied run of hot, cold and dry experiences to move between.

Treatments

Eleven treatment rooms carry a menu built around comfort zone and NEOM alongside the estate's own signature rituals, holistic therapies sitting next to more results driven treatments so a guest can choose depth of relaxation or a specific outcome. Therapists are trained to combine technique with product rather than run a single house style across every treatment.

Getting in

Spa days, spa breaks and standalone treatments are all bookable online through the estate's own site, and membership is available on enquiry for anyone wanting regular access. The hydropool, heat rooms and Spa Garden run sixteen and over at all times, and the main pool opens to children only in two set windows each day, in the morning and again in the afternoon, so families are best planning a visit around those specific hours rather than assuming all day access.

What to know before you fall in love

Most of the thermal circuit here is closed to children. The hydropool, heat rooms and Spa Garden are sixteen and over throughout, and even the main pool only opens to children in two set daily windows, so a family hoping to swim together across a whole day will find the access considerably narrower than the estate as a whole suggests.

Best for

For a couple or a small group wanting an infinity edge pool and a genuinely varied thermal circuit built around a country estate on the Tees, and for anyone pairing a spa day with dinner from a two Michelin starred culinary director across the wider estate.

We do not visit spas, so the write up above is built from published information. What it cannot tell you is how a place actually felt on the day. That part comes from you.
