The one thing

Santuario is built into the old underground stables of a twelfth century abbey, in the middle of a working wine estate, and its therapists are called Spa Sommeliers because they choose a ritual for each guest the way a sommelier chooses a bottle. Few spas in Europe can say that the building, the grapes outside the window and the method of the treatment all come from the same place.

The verdict

Abadía Retuerta sits in the Ribera del Duero, a long way from any coast and exactly where the best Spanish red wine has always come from, and the hotel has the quiet self-possession of somewhere that has been doing one thing well for nine centuries. The abbey was restored and opened as LeDomaine, a Leading Hotels of the World member with thirty rooms and suites, and the spa followed in 2015, tucked beneath the old stables with several entrances so that daylight reaches most of it. The spa puts the natural light at around eighty per cent, which is a remarkable thing to say about a space dug into the ground and one that changes the whole mood, because stone that might have felt heavy feels instead like a calm cave with the windows open.

The mood is hushed and unhurried. Phones are kept out, alcohol stays outside the spa doors, and the whole place runs at the speed of someone walking between vines. Because it is a wine estate first, everything leans on the grape, from the cosmetics to the vocabulary, and the effect is sensory and a little theatrical without ever being loud. Santuario covers more than a thousand square metres, large enough to feel like a destination yet far too intimate to feel like a resort, and it is a natural companion to a night in the abbey and dinner in the Refectorio, the former monastery dining room that holds a Michelin star and a Green Star.

The water

The heart of the spa is its indoor pool, filled with water drawn from a well sunk more than a hundred metres into the estate, then softened and filtered before it reaches the pool. The hotel says its quality is close to natural mineral water, and what that means to a swimmer is a soft, clean feel on the skin and a pool that never smells of anything but stone. Alongside it come a jacuzzi, a steam bath and showers scented with aromatherapy oils, followed by two relaxation areas where the stonework and low light invite a long lie down before and after a treatment. In summer an outdoor pool opens as well, and the swim from the cool stone interior into the open air of Castilla is one of the more memorable small moments the estate offers.

Privacy is part of the offer. The Spa Suite is a separate area reserved for a single party, with its own dressing room, sauna, steam bath, jacuzzi and showers, and it looks out over an inner garden. For couples especially it turns a spa visit into something close to a private bathhouse, and it is the one place in the building where a sauna is part of the picture.

Treatments

Four treatment cabins carry a menu that stays close to the vineyard. The Spa Sommelier rituals are the signature, and the hotel describes them as experiences tailored to the guest rather than chosen from a list, which is why they are the best first booking for anyone who is not sure what they want. Vinoble Cosmetics, made from grape extracts and grapeseed oil, supplies the rituals most tied to the estate, among them a vine inspired ritual in the Spa Suite and a longer one designed for two in the old cloister style.

The facials and body treatments use Natura Bissé, a well respected Spanish skincare house, and the massage menu runs from deep tissue and aroma relaxation to volcanic stone work and Thai foot massage, with Indian head massage as a lighter option. Yoga, meditation and Eastern treatments such as shiatsu and Ayurvedic massage give the stay a gentler second layer, and there is a dedicated pregnancy massage from the twelfth week for mothers to be. People travelling with teenagers will find a treatment made for them too, which the spa handles with care.

Getting in

Hotel guests have access to the spa as part of their stay, and a butler or the reservations team can book treatments. Visitors who are not staying can arrange a Wellness Day through the hotel, which is the route to the facilities without an overnight booking, and the reservations team can be reached by telephone on +34 983 687 600 or by email at reservations@ledomaine.es. Advance booking is advised, particularly for the Spa Suite and the longer rituals.

The spa is open from eleven in the morning until nine at night each day, with the summer outdoor pool open from noon until eight. Arriving fifteen minutes early lets the quiet settle before a treatment, and the hotel provides robes, slippers and lockers. Opening dates over the winter months are worth confirming when booking. The estate sits near Sardón de Duero, about forty five minutes from Valladolid airport and under two hours from Madrid, and the hotel can arrange transfers.

What to know before you fall in love

  • Santuario is a calm, adult leaning spa, and guests under sixteen are admitted only between eleven and one with a parent or guardian.
  • With four cabins and a restrained thermal offer built around the pool, steam bath and jacuzzi, it suits someone who wants treatments and quiet rather than a long circuit of saunas and ice rooms.
  • Pregnant guests are asked to avoid the hydrothermal facilities, though treatments designed for pregnancy remain available.

Best for

Couples and wine lovers who want a spa that belongs to its landscape, anyone who would rather be guided to the right ritual than choose from a menu, and travellers happy to trade a vast thermal circuit for a quiet stone sanctuary in the heart of the Ribera del Duero.
