The one thing

The Scarlet built its outdoor pool with a living reed bed instead of a chlorine dosing system, so the water guests swim in is filtered by plants rather than chemicals, and it sits on a clifftop above Mawgan Porth with nothing between the pool edge and the Atlantic but air.

The verdict

The Scarlet is a small hotel of thirty seven rooms, built in 2009 on a clifftop above Mawgan Porth beach on Cornwall's north coast, and it was designed from the outset as an eco hotel rather than fitted out as one afterwards, sea thrift growing on the roofs, a biomass boiler doing the heating, and solar panels doing what they can of the rest. Everything about the place, the spa included, follows from the same instinct to work with the site rather than against it.

The pool is the clearest expression of it. A living reed bed filters the outdoor pool naturally, without chlorine, so what looks like a striking design choice is also a genuine piece of engineering, and a second, more conventional indoor pool sits alongside it for anyone wanting a straightforward swim regardless of the weather. Out on the cliff edge, hot tubs look straight over the beach and the sea beyond it, and a cedar barrel sauna keeps the same view from a different temperature entirely.

Everything past the water runs on Oula, the spa's own Ayurvedic inspired range made in house, and the Scarlet Journey is the treatment to book if only one, a personalised route that starts with an Ayurvedic consultation and moves through a bathing ritual, meditation or sound work and a long massage built around whatever the consultation turns up. Therapists are trained to adapt facials from the first trimester of pregnancy and body treatments from the second, and a dual treatment room takes couples through the same journey side by side.

The whole hotel is adults only, eighteen and over, restaurant included, and the spa keeps day visits deliberately small, capped at groups of four, so the atmosphere stays closer to a private house than a resort. Staff are trained to work quietly around guests rather than announce themselves, and overnight guests get the run of complimentary stretching, breathwork and a guided cold water dip in the reed pool each morning, alongside Know Your Dosha workshops run by the in house wellbeing practitioner.

Day visitors book through a set of structured Spa Days rather than picking treatments individually, each one bundling facilities time with lunch or afternoon tea and, on the fuller days, a full Ayurvedic journey, while à la carte treatments outside those packages are kept for guests staying the night.

The water

Two pools carry the water side of The Scarlet, one indoor for a straightforward swim in any weather, and one outdoor, filtered by a living reed bed rather than chlorine, an approach that suits the hotel's wider eco building as much as it suits the water itself. Clifftop hot tubs look directly out over Mawgan Porth beach, and a cedar barrel sauna and a eucalyptus scented indoor steam room complete the heat side. Beyond the walk in facilities, hammam, rhassoul mud and a candlelit copper tub all appear as part of booked treatment rituals rather than rooms to wander into, and overnight guests are invited each morning into a guided Daily Dip, a cold water swim in the outdoor pool with the wellbeing team.

Treatments

The treatment range is built around Oula, the spa's own Ayurvedic inspired product line made in house, and the Scarlet Journey is the signature booking, a personalised route that opens with an Ayurvedic consultation and moves through a bathing ritual, meditation or sound work and a long, bespoke massage shaped by whatever the consultation reveals. The Attuned Massage and the Tula Facial sit alongside as the more conventional core of the menu, and a dual treatment room lets couples take the same journey together rather than side by side in separate rooms. Pregnancy is looked after properly too, with facials offered from the first trimester and body treatments from the second, and a full programme of complimentary wellness for overnight guests, stretching, grounding postures and guided breathwork among them, runs daily alongside the treatment menu.

Getting in

Spa facilities run from eight in the morning to eight at night for overnight guests, and Spa Days for non residents run from nine to five. Day visits are sold as structured packages, groups capped at four, each bundling facility time with lunch or afternoon tea and, on the longer days, a full treatment, while stand alone à la carte treatments are kept for guests staying overnight. Everyone through the door needs to be eighteen or over, no exceptions, restaurant included, and Cornwall Airport Newquay sits under ten minutes away by road for anyone flying in. The spa has a larger accessible changing cubicle with its own shower and toilet, lift access from reception, and a wide staircase with a handrail into the indoor pool, so do call ahead if step free access matters, since the steam room door and pool entry are both on the narrower side.

What to know before you fall in love

This is an adults only hotel, eighteen and over throughout, including the restaurant, so it is not the choice for a family trip.

Day visits are sold as structured Spa Days rather than a pick your own treatment list, and groups are deliberately capped at four, so it suits a quiet pair or a small gathering rather than a larger celebration.

The thermal side is compact by design, one indoor pool, one outdoor reed filtered pool, a sauna and a steam room, built around treatment journeys rather than a sprawling circuit to fill a whole day.

À la carte treatments outside a packaged Spa Day are kept for guests staying the night, so day visitors should plan around the structured packages rather than booking treatments individually.

Best for

Couples and solo travellers wanting a quiet, design led coastal escape with a genuine Ayurvedic treatment focus, and anyone who wants their spa day to include an actual swim in sea air rather than an indoor circuit alone. Eco minded guests will appreciate a spa built around a reed filtered pool rather than a chlorine dosing system, on a working clifftop rather than a purpose built resort.

Reviews from people who have been

We do not visit spas, so the write up above is built from published information. What it cannot tell you is how a place actually felt on the day. That part comes from you.

We are building this properly, so that a review says who went, when, and what the day was actually like. If you have been to this spa and would like to be among the first to write about it, do let us know at support@luxuryspaescapes.com.
