The one thing

The verdict

The Woodland Spa sits on its own within a hundred acres of Lancashire countryside near Burnley, part of the wider Crow Wood Hotel and Spa Resort, with Pendle Hill on one side and an ornamental lake on the other. A recent expansion doubled the spa in size, adding a whole second thermal zone rather than simply extending the first, and the operator has chosen to keep daily guest numbers roughly where they were rather than filling the new space, so the scale is real without the crowding that often comes with it.

Nine pools carry the thermal offer, among them a twelve metre outdoor infinity pool, two sixteen seat outdoor infinity edge jacuzzis, an indoor vitality pool with two more infinity edge hot tubs, a hydrotherapy pool and a separate low lit serenity pool. A sauna and a saunarium sit alongside a steam room, a salt steam room, an ice fountain and the KLAFS ice lounge, with two rasul mud chambers, Roman foot baths and a run of experience showers filling out the circuit. A fourteen bed relaxation room and a further set of bespoke lounge spaces called The Mezzanine give somewhere to recover between each stage.

Sixteen treatment rooms carry the spa menu, and the whole facility runs sixteen and over throughout, with no separate family session at any point in the day. Good Spa Guide named it Best UK Hotel Spa for the fourth year running in 2025, and it took a World Luxury Spa Award the same year for its thermal area.

The water

The twelve metre outdoor infinity pool anchors the outdoor side of the circuit, joined by two sixteen seat outdoor infinity edge jacuzzis and, on a separate rooftop terrace with its own fire pits, a further infinity pool with views back across the estate. Indoors, a hydrotherapy pool with massage jets sits near a vitality pool built around four hot tubs, two of them also finished with an infinity edge, and a serenity pool kept low lit and quieter than the rest of the circuit.

Heat and cold run just as deep. A traditional sauna and a lower intensity outdoor facing saunarium sit either side of a steam room and a separate salt steam room, and the ice side of the circuit runs from a Finnish style ice fountain through to the KLAFS ice lounge, a newer addition that Crow Wood describes as the UK's first multi sensory version of its kind, built around cold air and crushed ice rather than a single feature. Two rasul chambers, one for two guests and one for four, add a mud and steam ritual guests can book into the day, and a run of Roman foot baths and experience showers, from a soft tropical rain to an ice cold bucket shower, complete the circuit before the fourteen bed relaxation room and the smaller Mezzanine lounges.

Treatments

Sixteen treatment rooms run a menu built around TEMPLESPA, Medik8, NEOM and OPI, wide enough to cover facials, massage, body treatments and finishing touches without the guest needing to look elsewhere. Two treatments are written and named by the spa itself rather than licensed from a product house, a longer face and body glow ritual and a further full body escape, both built to be found only here.

The therapist team is trained through the Amethyst Trust and SATCC approved to treat guests living with cancer, a specific and genuinely useful qualification that many hotel spas do not carry, and a separate pre natal massage is offered from twelve weeks into pregnancy onward. Guests are asked to book by phone or through an online request form rather than an instant checkout, which gives the spa the chance to match the right therapist to the right guest before the day itself.

Getting in

Day guests are welcome without a hotel stay, through a straightforward day pass covering the whole thermal circuit, a version that adds a main course, dessert and a glass of wine, or a shorter evening pass running from half past five. Guests can also book a full spa break with a stay across the resort's bedrooms. The spa runs sixteen and over throughout, with group bookings capped at eight people and only one larger group accepted across the whole site on any given day, a deliberate choice to protect the feel of the place rather than a capacity limit reached by accident. Dining runs across four separate spaces on site, from a two AA Rosette restaurant to a rooftop bar serving pizza, and a vegan menu runs throughout, though the terrace and rooftop bars cannot accommodate every dietary need, only the main restaurant can with enough notice.

What to know before you fall in love

The resort around it is large and multi purpose, with a hotel, a separate health club and wedding and conference space all on the same hundred acre site, so this reads as a big, well resourced destination spa rather than a small hushed retreat, even though the spa itself keeps its own age restriction and group caps to manage the crowd. And while most of the grounds look out over Pendle Hill and the estate's own lake, the newer rooftop pool also takes in a view of the motorway running past the edge of the property, worth knowing if total quiet on every side is what a guest is picturing.
