The verdict

Yorebridge House sits inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park at Bainbridge, a greystone country house on the River Ure that changed hands in February 2025, when new owners David Whitehead and Joanne Dwyer took it on after the previous family had run it for nineteen years. The restaurant has held its place in the Michelin Guide for twelve consecutive years and carries three AA Rosettes and a Notable Wine List award, so the kitchen was already doing serious work long before the spa existed at all.

Ure River Retreat itself only opened in April 2026, a new riverside sanctuary added to a house that had spent years being known for its rooms and its table rather than its wellness offer. Rather than build something to compete on scale, Yorebridge House built something to compete on privacy, a single spa space handed over completely for two hours at a time, never shared, never queued for.

The house around it has thirteen individually styled bedrooms and suites, seven of them with their own private outdoor hot tubs on terraces beside the river, so a stay here already has water built into it before anyone books the spa proper. That domestic scale, a house of thirteen rooms rather than a resort of hundreds, is what makes the Ure River Retreat feel less like an add on and more like the natural extension of a home that already faces the water.

This is a small, honest addition to a well regarded country house, not a spa built to be judged against a resort thermal circuit, and it earns its place for exactly that reason.

The water

The sequence is simple and that is the point. Yorebridge House calls it the Ritual of Elements, and it runs in three named stages rather than a wandering circuit. The Sanctuary Sauna is hand built in timber, heated dry, with hill views through the glass rather than tiled walls to stare at. From there the River View Hot Tub sits open to the water and the sky, close enough to the Ure that the sound of it carries, and the Glacial Refresh finishes the loop with a crisp cold water shower rather than a plunge pool. That is the entire wet journey, heat, warmth, cold, and it is not padded out with anything else.

Treatments

The whole retreat runs around a single treatment room, so this is a spa built for one couple or one small group rather than a menu of parallel therapists. Treatments use the GAIA skincare range, and the standard exclusive use session includes one thirty minute treatment each for a couple, taken either before or after the sauna and water. Because everything happens in the same private booking, from the first sauna session to the last few minutes on the deck, the spa never feels like a series of separate stops, more like one continuous two hours shaped entirely around whoever has booked it.

Getting in

Ure River Retreat is exclusive use only, pre booked in two hour sessions for up to four guests, and the retreat runs from eight in the morning to eight at night, subject to availability. That private booking model is the whole idea rather than a restriction to work around, though it does mean nobody can turn up and expect to share the space with other guests, because there is only ever one party in it at a time. Both hotel guests and day visitors can book a session directly, and the session can also be bought as a gift voucher for someone else, so it works as a present as easily as it works as part of a stay.
