A vinotherapy spa built from the estate's own grapes, under Frank Gehry's titanium canopy.
Best forWine lovers who want a spa day that tastes of the vineyard, A stay built around a working winery rather than a resort, Travellers drawn to gehry's architecture as much as the treatments
The one thing
The treatments here are made from the same harvest that fills the bottles stacked in the cellar below. Caudalie's vinotherapy method soaks grape pomace, the crushed skins and pips left once the wine itself has been pressed, into a warm bath that the spa calls the Barrel Bath, and it is as close as a treatment can get to lying inside the winemaking itself rather than beside it. The whole spa sits under Frank Gehry's titanium ribbon roof, its pink, gold and silver folds a literal echo of a wine bottle's foil and cork, so the building and the treatment say the same thing in two different languages.
The verdict
Marqués de Riscal built its reputation as a winery first, and the spa reads as an addition to that estate rather than the other way round. The Rioja Alavesa countryside rolls out beyond the glass, vines reaching almost to the hotel's own walls, and the sense of a working wine estate never quite leaves, even once you are in a robe. The hotel holds a MICHELIN Key, an independently judged mark of a genuinely exceptional stay, and that recognition sits comfortably alongside the architecture, since Gehry's titanium canopy remains one of the most photographed pieces of hotel design in Spain two decades on. Therapists are trained in Bordeaux, the region where Caudalie's vinotherapy method began, so the French winemaking pedigree has been carried wholesale into a Spanish estate rather than borrowed loosely. What the spa does not offer is scale. The wet area stays close to one pool, a sauna, a hammam and a jacuzzi, and anyone picturing a long thermal circuit with half a dozen heat experiences should recalibrate before booking. For a couple or a solo traveller who wants a spa day that tastes unmistakably of the vineyard around it, this is a genuinely distinctive choice. For anyone chasing scale over story, it is a smaller one than the architecture might suggest.
The water
A heated indoor pool sits at the centre of the circuit, its jets moving water around the room rather than leaving it still, and a Finnish sauna and a hammam carry the heat and steam side of things. A traditional foot bath, the kind once used across wine country to soothe feet after a day among the vines, and a jacuzzi round out the wet areas, and a rainforest shower gives the circuit a brisker, cooler finish. It is a compact, well kept set of facilities rather than an extensive one, built for an hour or two of unwinding between treatments rather than a full day's thermal journey.
Treatments
Beyond the Barrel Bath, the menu leans hard into its winemaking theme. A Crushed Cabernet Scrub exfoliates with the same grape remnants used in the bath, the Caudalie Grand Facial draws on the brand's grapeseed polyphenol research, and a Merlot body wrap and a treatment the spa calls the Winemaker's massage round out the signature list. Therapists trained in Bordeaux bring real technique to the wet, grape based rituals in particular, since that is the specific skill Caudalie's own spas were built to teach. Beyond single treatments, the spa also arranges personalised health cures running from two to six days, built around a guest's own goals rather than sold as a fixed package, for anyone extending a stay into something closer to a proper reset.
Getting in
Day visitors and non residents are welcome here with a booking made ahead, so a stay at the hotel is not a requirement for using the spa, only a reservation is. The wet areas and treatments run Sunday to Thursday from ten in the morning until eight in the evening, and Friday and Saturday until nine. The nearest airport is Logroño-Agoncillo, around forty five minutes away by car, with Vitoria a little further and Bilbao the furthest of the three realistic options at around ninety minutes. There is no hotel shuttle, though a private car can be arranged through the hotel on request, which is worth doing given how rural the setting is.
What to know before you fall in love
This is an adults' spa, open to guests aged eighteen and over, so it is not the place for a family spa day. Seasonal closures beyond the daily opening hours aren't stated anywhere the spa or hotel make public, so anyone planning around a specific date, particularly over winter, should confirm directly before travelling. The spa has also grown and changed since it first opened in 2006, when it launched with fourteen treatment rooms across roughly thirteen hundred square metres, and while the hotel's own current figures put the space nearer fourteen hundred square metres, no current treatment room count is given, so take any specific number you read elsewhere with real caution.
Best for
This suits a wine loving couple or a solo traveller who wants their spa day to taste of the vineyard rather than a generic product line, and anyone who finds Gehry's architecture as much a reason to visit as the treatments themselves. It is a better fit for someone building a trip around Rioja's wine country than someone searching purely for a long thermal circuit, since the wet areas here stay compact and the real distinction lies in what goes into the treatments rather than how many rooms hold them.
