VivaMayr Maria Wörth
VivaMayr Maria Wörth
Lake Wörthersee, Austria
Our assessment: Gold · 80%
Every stay opens and closes with a doctor's own exam, built on a modernised century old digestive method.
Best forGuests wanting a genuinely medically supervised reset led by named doctors; anyone drawn to the century old mayr method brought up to date with contemporary diagnostics; guests planning a full week specifically around the method itself; anyone happy to spend that week without alcohol, snacking or a conventional restaurant scene
The one thing
Every stay here starts and ends with a doctor, not a therapist. VivaMayr Maria Wörth runs an entire resort around a single medically supervised method, Modern Mayr Medicine, built from the century old digestive reset work of the Austrian physician Franz Xaver Mayr and brought up to date here on the shore of Lake Wörthersee since 2004 by Dr Harald and Christine Stossier. A doctor examines every guest on arrival and again before departure, shaping an individual plan from applied kinesiology, mineral and acid balance testing and a strict reset of what and how a guest eats, right down to chewing every mouthful roughly forty times. It is a genuinely clinical week, not a wellness label stuck onto a hotel stay.
The verdict
The original F. X. Mayr Cure dates back more than a century, developed by Dr Mayr himself through fasting and digestive work he began around 1915, mostly from clinics in Vienna and Karlsbad rather than from this particular lakeside address. What VivaMayr built at Maria Wörth from 2004 is its own modernised version of that method, layering contemporary diagnostics, orthomolecular nutrient medicine and functional testing onto Dr Mayr's original intestinal and digestive work, all under the current medical department led by Dr Sepp Bodo Fegerl alongside Dr Werner Zancolo and Dr Doris Schuscha. The resort calls its approach Modern Mayr Medicine, its own name for what it has built here, and that branding is worth knowing as the resort's own term rather than a settled piece of medical history.
The resort itself sits directly on Lake Wörthersee, with forty six rooms and suites ranging from compact standard rooms to a three bedroom villa with its own private garden and bathing dock. Every stay includes free use of the wellness area, the sauna, steam baths, the pool and the fitness room, though these support the medical programme rather than standing as the main event, this is a clinic with spa facilities around it, not a spa with a clinic bolted on.
The water
An indoor pool sits at the centre of the wellness area, used for gentle movement rather than lengths, alongside indoor and outdoor saunas, an infrared sauna and a Kneipp area for cold water therapy, a traditional Austrian treatment using alternating temperatures to stimulate circulation. A gym looks straight out over the lake, and the resort's own private dock and bathing area bring Wörthersee itself into the daily rhythm of a stay, a short walk from the main building rather than a separate excursion.
Treatments
The real treatment menu here is diagnostic as much as it is relaxing. Guests are assessed through ultrasound of the abdomen, vessels and thyroid, an ECG, a sleep lab, heart rate variability testing and laboratory analysis of minerals, fatty acids and heavy metals, with colon hydrotherapy, ozone therapy and cryotherapy at minus one hundred and ten degrees among the therapies drawn on once a picture of each guest's own health has been built. Movement runs alongside the clinical side, Pilates reformer work, vibration plate training, EMS and an Icaros virtual reality trainer sit beside more traditional hiking, cycling, rowing and Nordic walking routes around the lake.
Meals follow the Mayr method exactly: three small meals a day with no snacking, a restricted alkaline diet built mostly from soup, Epsom salts each morning and an alkalising base powder taken through the day, and still water, vegetable broth or herbal tea rather than anything with alcohol, sugar, wheat or caffeine. It is a genuinely different kind of eating for a week, built to let the digestive system properly rest rather than simply to cut calories.
Getting in
A stay here is booked as a full residential medical programme rather than a single treatment or a day visit, and seven nights is the practical minimum the resort itself asks for, since it says the method's own benefits only properly unfold after a week. Guests aged twelve to seventeen may visit only by prior arrangement with the resort directly. Klagenfurt Airport is the closest, around twenty minutes by road, with Ljubljana Airport in neighbouring Slovenia a secondary option roughly fifty minutes away, and Vienna a longer transfer at around three and a half hours.
What to know before you fall in love
This is a clinic first and a spa second, so a guest hoping for a conventional hotel spa afternoon, a hammam, a long treatment menu or a glass of wine with dinner should look elsewhere in Austria rather than here. The seven night minimum stay and the mandatory arrival and departure medical consultations mean this only works as a planned week, not a quick add on to a wider trip, and the restricted, alcohol free diet at the centre of every stay is demanding by design rather than a holiday indulgence. Children under twelve are not admitted at all, so this isn't a stay to plan around a young family.
Best for
This suits a guest who wants a genuinely medically supervised reset, led by named doctors working from real diagnostics rather than a spa menu dressed up in clinical language, and anyone drawn to the century old Mayr method brought up to date with contemporary testing and nutrition science. It is a strong match for someone planning a proper week away specifically for the method itself, and for a guest happy to spend that week without alcohol, snacking or a conventional restaurant scene. It suits less well a guest wanting a shorter stay, a day visit or a lighter touch wellness break, since the whole programme is built around a full week and a doctor's own plan.
