Galgorm was the first thermal spa village of its kind in Ireland, and it still feels built for outdoor bathing rather than indoor treatment. The circuit unfolds across four separate riverside gardens along the River Maine, so a visit becomes a slow walk between wood fired hot tubs, saunas and a snow cabin, not a single loop round one room. The accommodation carries its own standout: alongside hotel rooms, Galgorm's forest cabins and shepherd's huts range up to the Forest Den Suite, which comes with its own private outdoor hot tub and sauna, so a couple can bathe at their own front door without setting foot in the main village at all.

The verdict

This is a large, lively destination spa rather than a small boutique retreat, and it wears that scale well, especially with friends or as a couple who want plenty to see and do. Nine named heat and cool experiences sit alongside an indoor hydrotherapy pool, outdoor vitality and alpine pools, a salt cave, and dozens of individual wood fired bathing tubs scattered through the gardens. It is genuinely popular, particularly at weekends and through its own stated peak window of three until six in the afternoon, so this reads as a sociable day out rather than a hushed, tranquil escape. Accommodation runs just as wide as the spa itself, from hotel rooms through to forest cabins and shepherd's huts, some with a private outdoor hot tub and sauna built into the room, private enough that a couple never has to visit the main village at all if they would rather bathe at their own door. Food and drink are folded into the day itself, at a timber topped eatery overlooking the river and a garden bar among olive trees, so there is little reason to leave the grounds once you arrive. Treatments lean on Elemis and the CBD infused OTO range, including a signature massage the resort describes as the first of its kind in Europe.

The water

The Riverside Garden sits on the banks of the River Maine itself, with outdoor pools, hot tubs, a salt cave and the Celtic Sauna. A riverside boardwalk leads on to the Alpine Garden, home to the Vitality Pool, the Alpine Pool, more saunas and a set of relax cabanas. Cross a private bridge beyond the river and the Forest Spa Garden opens up as a secluded woodland retreat, with three hot tubs and four cabanas fitted with waterbeds among the trees. Back through the grounds, the Walled Garden brings meandering paths, a steam room, sauna and more hot tubs, gathered around The Palm House. Indoors, a twenty metre pool and a hydrotherapy pool with therapeutic jets sit alongside a snow cabin for cooling down and a run of specialist saunas, from a Laconium to a gentler Sanarium.

Treatments

The spa currently runs fifteen treatment rooms, working with Elemis for facials and body treatments and OTO for its CBD infused massages, including a signature Quartz treatment built around a heated sand bed and a soundscape journey. Recovery Spa treatments are available for guests who have had or are having cancer treatment, and most experiences can be adapted for pregnancy from fourteen weeks for body work and from just one week for facials. There is no separate shared treatment room built for couples. Instead, couples time is built around the private wood fired bathing tubs and garden cabanas, or around one of the forest huts with its own hot tub and sauna, which is worth knowing if a shared treatment room matters more to you than a shared tub.

Getting in

Galgorm is open to day visitors as well as resort residents, with a full menu of day spa packages bookable online, from a sunrise focused Dawn Experience with breakfast through to an evening Nightfall Experience with a two course meal. The Thermal Spa Village opens daily from eight in the morning until ten at night, with treatments available between ten and six. This is an adults only environment throughout those hours, open to guests aged sixteen and over, with sixteen and seventeen year olds needing to be accompanied by an adult at all times. The one family exception is a narrow window each day when the indoor pool alone opens for guests whose stay includes spa access, from nine to ten in the morning and half past five to half past six in the evening. Staying accommodation ranges widely too, from hotel rooms through to individual forest cabins and shepherd's huts dotted through the grounds.

What to know before you fall in love

• This is a big, sociable village rather than a tranquil hideaway, and the resort's own guidance flags three until six in the afternoon and weekends generally as its busiest stretch, worth planning around if you prefer things quieter
• The spa is adults only from opening to close, aged sixteen and over, with only that one narrow indoor pool window for families
• Swimwear is required throughout the Thermal Spa Village, and suitable footwear must be worn at all times
• Accommodation spans hotel rooms to forest cabins and shepherd's huts, several with their own private outdoor hot tub and sauna, so it is worth looking beyond the standard room if privacy matters to you
