The one thing

Ten of Gilpin Hotel's own guest rooms are entirely private spas in their own right, five Spa Lodges and five Spa Suites, each holding its own sauna and hydrotherapy hot tub behind a single closed door, so a couple can have the whole of their spa to themselves for as long as they are staying. A mile down the road, Gilpin Lake House goes further again, with a treatment room raised three metres into the tree canopy over its own private tarn, reached along a woodland path rather than a corridor.

The verdict

Gilpin has been run by the Cunliffe family since 1988, and that family ownership shows in how personal the whole place feels next to a spa built by a hotel group. Two estates make up the business now, a mile apart and linked by a complimentary chauffeur, and the split is worth understanding before anything else. Gilpin Hotel, the original property outside Windermere, holds thirty rooms, two restaurants and the central Spa Space, open to residents and day guests alike. Gilpin Lake House, the newer addition, is an entirely separate eight room house set alone around its own private tarn, its spa reserved for whoever is staying there.

Two Michelin Keys sit across the whole business, alongside a Michelin star at SOURCE under chef Ollie Bridgwater, Relais and Chateaux membership and AA Five Red Stars, so the credentials match the setting. But it is the private spa model that sets Gilpin apart from a country house running the expected shared sauna and steam room. Rather than pooling everyone into one thermal suite, the deepest wellness experience here is built into the rooms themselves, five Spa Lodges with their own cedar sauna and outdoor hydrotherapy tub, and five Spa Suites adding a double sauna and steam unit, an automated massage chair and a circular stone bath. Book one of those and the spa effectively becomes private for the length of a stay.

The shared facilities read more modestly by comparison, which is worth being honest about. Gilpin Hotel's own Spa Space is a compact, couples focused space built from a fallen storm garden, two hot tubs, a steam room and double treatment rooms, with no indoor pool of its own. Gilpin Lake House answers that with a heated indoor pool and its own sauna, plus the two outdoor hot tubs and the tree canopy Jetty Spa treatment room that give the whole estate its signature image. Read together, this is less a big thermal circuit and more a series of private, beautifully made spaces, and which one suits a visit best depends on whether the shared Spa Space or a private in room spa is what someone actually wants from the day.

The water

At Gilpin Hotel, the water sits in two sunken hot tubs in a garden built from the roots and stumps of trees felled in Storm Arwen, alongside a natural stone steam room, with no indoor pool anywhere on this side of the business. Anyone wanting a proper swim needs to look to Gilpin Lake House instead, where a heated indoor pool opens onto the gardens and the lakeshore, backed by a traditional sauna finished with salt panels. Outside, a cedarwood hot tub looks straight over the tarn, and a second, twenty seven jet hydrotherapy tub adds real pressure to tired shoulders while the Lakeland fells sit somewhere off toward Morecambe Bay.

The ten private in room spas complete the picture. Each Spa Lodge pairs an indoor steam room with an outdoor twenty seven jet hydrotherapy hot tub and its own cedarwood sauna, set inside a walled garden that belongs to that room alone, and each Spa Suite adds a sunken outdoor hot tub to a double sauna and steam unit under one roof. None of this adds up to a large communal thermal suite, and there is no hammam, no salt room and no snow room anywhere on the estate, but the private version of each experience runs deeper than a shared one usually does.

Treatments across both estates draw on ESPA and on Pure Lakes, a plant based, handmade skincare brand founded just down the road in Cumbria by Claire and Gareth McKeever, so the local and the international sit comfortably side by side on the menu. Everything here is pitched as something to share. The Spa Space's own treatment rooms are built for two, every Spa Day and Spa Trail is sold for a pair rather than a single guest, and the strapline running through the whole property asks why anyone would share their spa when they could have it entirely to themselves. That couples first thinking carries through to the Lake House's Jetty Spa Trail too, a three to four hour journey that moves from a private swim through a sauna session with an iced fruit drink, a salt scrub shower, a woodland walk to the treatment room itself for an aromatherapy massage, and on to a cream tea and a glass of something cold back at the water's edge.

Getting in

Gilpin Hotel's Spa Space takes both residents and non residents, booked as one of several named Spa Days and Experiences that bundle facility time with a treatment and food, from a Pan Asian lunch through to a Michelin starred dinner at SOURCE. A treatment can also be added on its own, with facility access charged separately if it is not already part of the package. Gilpin Lake House works differently. Its pool, sauna, hot tubs and the Jetty Spa itself are reserved for whoever is staying at the Lake House, so a day visit only reaches the Hotel side of the business, never the Lake House.

The spa across both sites is sixteen and over, so this is not a spa for a family day, even though the wider hotel welcomes children aged seven and above for a stay. Booking runs through the property's own website, by phone or by email, with confirmation arriving within a day and a forty eight hour cancellation window worth knowing about before committing. Gilpin Hotel keeps a small number of dog friendly rooms, though the dog policy at Lake House specifically was not published. Windermere station sits around fifteen minutes away by car, and Gilpin Lake House can also be taken over in its entirety for an exclusive stay, the whole house, grounds, pool and Jetty Spa given over to one party alone.

What to know before you fall in love

The whole spa, at both estates, is sixteen and over, so anyone hoping to bring children into the water needs to look elsewhere, even though the hotel itself takes children from age seven for a stay. Day visitors can only reach Gilpin Hotel's own Spa Space, since the Lake House's pool, sauna and Jetty Spa are kept for guests actually staying there, so a day trip alone will never see that half of the business. Gilpin Hotel itself has no swimming pool at all, so anyone wanting a proper swim needs either a stay at the Lake House or a treatment booked in one of the private in room spas instead. And the shared facilities on both sides are genuinely compact next to the ten private in room spas, two hot tubs and a steam room at the Hotel, one pool and one sauna at the Lake House, so the real depth of this place lies in booking a room with its own spa rather than expecting one large communal circuit.
