Monart sits outside Enniscorthy in County Wexford, on the south east corner of Ireland, in more than a hundred acres of mature woodland that the property has shaped rather than simply occupied. The core of the estate is Monart House, a Georgian era building the property describes on some pages as eighteenth century and on others as raised in 1840, and it still holds two heritage suites and the daily ritual of Afternoon Tea. Around that older house sits a purpose built contemporary wing, sixty eight deluxe bedrooms that bring the total to seventy keys, all built with the thermal circuit as the reason for staying rather than an amenity tucked away for wet weather.

The grounds carry much of that atmosphere. Dining runs from a fine dining Restaurant, recommended by both the Michelin and Bridgestone guides, through to the more relaxed Garden Lounge for a glass of wine or a cocktail, with Afternoon Tea served in the historic house and a Spa Cafe offering something lighter, juices and smoothies among them. Ingredients are sourced close to home, from Wexford and the wider south east, with named local growers such as Sunderland Farm, Cullens Fruit and Vegetables and Fortunes Potatoes turning up in the kitchen's own telling of where things come from.

The water

Nine thermal experiences make up the circuit at Monart, and the property's own description of them reads like a proper journey rather than a list of rooms to tick off. It opens with heated benches and footbaths, moves through a Salt Grotto and an aromatic eucalyptus steam room, and takes in a Caldarium that looks straight out over the lake and its waterfall, so the view does as much work as the heat. A Finnish sauna and an Infra Red Pro follow, before the circuit steps outside altogether for a log cabin sauna and finishes at an ice bucket shower, cold enough to remind a body exactly what the last two hours were doing for it. Two proper pools carry the wet side of the visit. The Kneippe Cure Pool gives a cold plunge and a walking circuit built on that old Austrian tradition of alternating temperature to move blood around the body, and a fifty five square metre Hydrotherapy Pool, fed by nine separate water jet stations, is large enough to actually swim a length or two between treatments.
