The one thing

The pool sits under a painted sky, a trompe l'oeil ceiling built as a deliberate echo of an ancient Roman bath, with colonnades, frescoes and hundreds of thousands of hand set mosaic tiles running down into the water. Swim a length and the sound changes too, since built in speakers carry music that seems to rise straight out of the tiles themselves. Paris has no shortage of beautiful hotel pools, and this is routinely named among the most beautiful of all of them.

The verdict

César Ritz opened this hotel on the Place Vendôme in 1898 with Auguste Escoffier running the kitchen, and the building has spent more than a century collecting the kind of history most hotels only claim. Coco Chanel kept a suite here for thirty four years. Hemingway drank his way through the Liberation of Paris at what is now Bar Hemingway. Proust wrote here, and so, in their own ways, did a long list of writers and film stars who are easier to name than to count. The hotel closed in 2012 for a four year rebuild under architect Thierry Despont and reopened in June 2016, and everything since has been built to match what came before rather than replace it.

The Club & Spa took its own turn in October 2022, when a floral redesign gave each of its four treatment rooms a name and a story. Edelweiss remembers Marie-Louise Ritz, Iris belongs to Colette, Orchid to Zelda Fitzgerald and Rose to Ingrid Bergman, and each room carries a hand painted mural and a porcelain flower ceiling light built around its own name. So the design is not decoration laid over a generic room but a set of small tributes to women who actually passed through this address.

La Prairie became the spa's skincare partner in September 2025, its third in a decade after Chanel and then Biologique Recherche, and each change has brought its own exclusive creation rather than a shelf of products anyone could buy elsewhere. The current signature pairs a dumortierite hot stone back massage with the brand's Skin Caviar line, made specifically for this spa and nowhere else. Few hotel spas refresh their headline partner this often, and each time the Ritz Club & Spa has used the change to write a new treatment rather than simply restock.

The water

The pool itself runs close to sixteen metres, heated enough that the ancient Roman pastiche above you stops feeling like a theme and starts feeling like the point, and the mosaic floor and walls catch the light differently depending on where you are in the room. A sauna, hammam and steam room sit off the pool, and relaxation alcoves give the whole sequence somewhere quiet to land once the heat and the water are done. It is a compact, finished circuit rather than a sprawling one, built around that single extraordinary room rather than spread thin across many smaller ones.

Treatments

La Prairie's current signature here combines a dumortierite hot stone back massage with the brand's Skin Caviar line, a treatment created specifically for this address. Seven facial treatments sit alongside it, two of them designed with men in mind, plus a marine salt body exfoliation the house calls genuinely its own. The Rose Ritual, built around a private hammam inside its own named suite, is the closest thing here to a dedicated couples experience. David Mallett, whose clients include Natalie Portman and Kate Winslet, runs the hair salon, and a fitness room rounds out the offer for anyone keeping up a routine between treatments.

Getting in

You do not need to be staying at the hotel to use the Club & Spa. Facility access to the pool, sauna, steam room and fitness room is open to outside visitors on its own terms, so a day built entirely around that pool is a genuine option rather than a guest only privilege. Treatments run daily through the evening, with the pool and wellness side open earlier and later again. Anyone under sixteen needs an adult with them, which is worth knowing before you plan a visit with teenagers in tow. Book this spa directly with the hotel.

What to know before you fall in love

The exact pool dimensions and the precise number of treatment rooms are reported differently from one source to another, so neither is stated here as a single fixed figure. The spa has its own separate street entrance from the hotel itself, and published addresses for that entrance vary, so it is worth confirming the entrance when you book rather than simply following the hotel's own address. This is a compact circuit built around one spectacular room rather than a sprawling thermal park, so anyone wanting a long, varied journey through many different spaces may find it smaller than expected.

Best for

Anyone who wants to swim inside one of the most beautiful rooms in Paris, couples drawn to a named, storied treatment suite rather than a numbered one, and skincare devotees who want to try a ritual made for this address and nowhere else.
