Swinton Park is a Victorian, Gothic style castle hotel at the heart of one of England's largest privately owned estates, twenty thousand acres held by the Cunliffe Lister family and running to a deer park, working farms and moorland on the fringe of the Yorkshire Dales. The Country Club and Spa stands apart from the castle itself, a contemporary building of timber and glass finished in earthy browns, fern greens and sky blues, built deliberately to feel like the outdoors brought in rather than an extension of the older house it serves.

The spread of outdoor wellness here is the widest of its kind in the region. Beyond the bio filtered natural pool, guests can walk out to a separate wild swimming lake in the grounds, sit by an alfresco herbal sauna with sheepskins and a fire pit, or follow a barefoot path through the spa garden past woodland hammocks. It is also a rural estate near Masham with the nearest airport the best part of an hour away by car, a real consideration for anyone travelling without one rather than a mark against the spa itself.
