The one thing

A 1,672 square metre spa and private members club inside a Regency landmark at Hyde Park Corner, where a dedicated spa butler carries you through the day the way the hotel's butlers carry its guests through their stay. Grand London spas tend to keep their doors half closed, and the quiet surprise here is that this one can simply be booked.

The verdict

The Lanesborough began life as a Regency country house and spent a century and a half as St George's Hospital before Oetker Collection made it the most opulent address at Hyde Park Corner, and the Club & Spa continues the house style below stairs. Nothing about it is minimal. Veined marble, warm wood and brass sit under soft light, the relaxation lounge reads as a Belgravia drawing room, and the whole spa runs to the rhythm of its butlers, who meet guests, walk them between rooms, and keep the day moving without it ever feeling moved.

What the place actually is takes a moment to describe, because it is three things at once. It is a members club, with a gym floor of Woodway treadmills, Technogym bikes and small studio classes that stays strictly with members and hotel guests. It is a hotel spa for the 93 rooms upstairs. And it is, unusually for this corner of London, an open door, because anyone can book a treatment, a spa day or even a simple facilities pass and be welcomed in with the same ceremony.

The treatment list is where the ambition shows. Alongside massage and facials from Royal Fern, Ground Wellbeing, ila and Tata Harper sits one of the most complete doctor led aesthetics offers in any London hotel spa, with Dr Galyna Selezneva running microneedling, Morpheus8, peels, Profhilo, injectables and IV drips, the osteopath Dr Garry Trainer in residence, and Suzanne Martin shaping her Couture Brow. A nail salon and the pretty Painting Room, where L'Atelier Green paints manicures over afternoon tea, complete a spa that covers more ground than its footprint suggests.

The water

The pool is a hydrotherapy pool, and the distinction matters. This is water built for jets rather than lengths, positioned stations massaging shoulders, backs and legs, and it is the spa's single body of water, shared and sociable in the way of a Roman bath rather than a swimming lane. Around it, the thermal offer lives inside the male and female changing suites, each with its own sauna, steam room and rain showers, finished to the same standard as everything else in the building.

The private option is lovelier still. The double treatment suite carries its own steam rasul, where couples are painted in warm bio energy mud and left to steam in privacy, and it anchors the Couples Retreat spa day.

Hours are long by London standards, 6.00am to 10.00pm on weekdays and 7.00am to 9.00pm at weekends. Families get real windows rather than a cold shoulder, with splash hours twice daily, weekday mornings and afternoons and weekend equivalents, and outside those windows the water returns to adult quiet.

Treatments

The Lanesborough Signature Massage anchors the menu, and the house rituals draw on Ground Wellbeing's Irish rooted, deeply calming bodywork and Royal Fern's plant science facials, with ila and Tata Harper carrying the holistic and organic end and HydraFacial the instant results end. Selected treatments open to 16 and 17 year olds with an adult present, and mothers to be are treated from the second trimester.

The spa days are genuinely built days rather than a treatment with a robe. The flagship No. 1 Hyde Park runs top to toe at £665 with the Signature Massage, a salt crystal scrub, a Royal Fern facial, a manicure or pedicure and lunch. The Afternoon Indulgence pairs the Signature Massage with the hotel's Bridgerton afternoon tea at £355, the Couples Retreat takes the rasul and a massage for two at £700, and a run of wellbeing days crafted with Dr Selezneva, from The Burnout Recovery to The Red Carpet Ready, climbs to £1,000 for the most complete.

The aesthetics floor deserves its own sentence, because Morpheus8, Evolve X, fat dissolving, Profhilo, botox, dermal fillers and physician administered IV drips are clinic territory, and having them delivered inside a Regency landmark with a butler outside the door is a combination very few cities can offer at all.

Getting in

Anyone can book, which is worth saying plainly about a spa this grand. Treatments and spa days sit on the club's own webshop, the telephone is +44 (0)20 7333 7064, and advance booking is recommended. The arithmetic of access is simple and published: any booking of £250 or more per person includes all the spa facilities, a smaller booking can add a day pass at £75, and a facilities only pass is sold at £150 with ID requested on arrival. The gym floor is the one closed door, kept for members and hotel guests.

Membership runs from Full and Joint through Spa, Corporate, Overseas, Under 30s and Short Term tiers, by enquiry rather than price list, and brings the gym, classes, guest passes and discounts with it. Spa days cancel free up to 48 hours ahead, single treatments up to 24 hours, and guests are asked to arrive 20 minutes early with swimwear for the thermal areas, since robes, towels and slippers are provided.

Wheelchair access comes via 1 Knightsbridge next door, where the team escorts guests in, and every area except the pool is accessible, with adapted showers and WCs in both changing rooms. Hyde Park Corner station is a couple of minutes on foot, Knightsbridge station a short walk, and Heathrow about forty five minutes by car.

Anyone whose idea of luxury is being looked after by name, because the butler service is the real signature here. Visitors combining serious aesthetics, a Morpheus8 session or physician led drips, with an afternoon that ends in tea rather than a waiting room. And Londoners who want one of the city's grandest spas without needing a membership or a room key to get through the door.
