The one thing

Castlemartyr goes further and names its rituals in Irish, Codladh for sleep, Beo for energy, Talamh for feeling grounded, each one built by GROUND Wellbeing, a small Cork house working in natural, vegan ingredients. The house signature, Tenalach, meaning earth song, is blended specifically for this estate from lemon verbena, sweet geranium, rose, fennel, pine and lavender, so the massage oil on the table is tied to the parkland outside the window rather than to a shelf of identical bottles sold at a hundred other hotels.

The verdict

Castlemartyr takes its name from a castle the Knights Templar built here in the thirteenth century, and the ruins still stand beside the Manor House today, roughly eight hundred years old and genuinely part of the grounds rather than a plaque on a wall. Sir Walter Raleigh held the estate at one point, and it was under Richard Boyle, the Earl of Cork, that the Manor House itself went up, later restored with real care and now the centre of the resort. A Templar Cross taken from the ruins forms the crest on the golf club's own coat of arms, and the Tomb of the Third Earl of Cork sits on the estate too, so the history here is not decoration, it is underfoot.

Around the Manor, 220 acres of parkland and woodland spread out in East Cork, between Midleton and Youghal, twenty minutes from Cork city. The water

The wet side of Castlemartyr splits into segregated male and female vitality lounges, each holding a sauna, a steam room, experience showers and a pool that the resort's own current pages describe two ways, a vitality pool in one document and a jet pool in another, both clearly the same kind of facility even if the property has not settled on a single name for it. Light and dark relaxation areas sit alongside, giving guests somewhere quiet to recover between the heat and the water. A twenty metre indoor pool rounds out the main circuit, heated and calm rather than dramatic, built for proper swimming rather than a quick dip.

The Serenity Suite adds a private version of the same idea for couples, its own vitality pool and sauna reserved for an hour before the Together Massage begins, so two people get the whole circuit to themselves rather than sharing the main lounges. Treatments

ESPA carries the facial menu here, from a straightforward Skin Solutions treatment through to a seventy five minute Natural Lift Facial, alongside the Castlemartyr Signature Therapy and a choice of aromatherapy or hot stone rituals that run to ninety minutes when the day allows for it. GROUND Wellbeing does something different, building its menu around how a guest actually feels rather than a list of skin concerns, so Codladh is booked for rest, Beo for energy, Talamh for feeling grounded, and Tenalach, the estate's own signature blend, for something closer to a sense of place than a specific outcome. Cúram, the pregnancy ritual, is offered from the second trimester onward and for nursing mothers, and therapists can tailor a treatment for anyone living with or beyond cancer, simply by mentioning it when booking.

Full and half day packages fold treatment together with lunch at Canopy Brasserie, Deeply Grounded pairing a GROUND ritual with the Biome Facial, and Mindful Moments building an ESPA exfoliation, massage and facial into one longer sitting. The Beauty Rooms handle nails and hair separately, manicures and pedicures with The Manicure Company and OPI polish, alongside blow dries, cuts and colour for anyone wanting to leave properly finished rather than simply treated.

Getting in

The spa opens from nine in the morning until seven at night, with treatments bookable between ten and six, and non residents are genuinely welcome, allocated a locker, robe and slippers on arrival in the same way hotel guests are. Booking runs through the spa's own online system, by phone or by email, and a credit card is needed to hold every reservation. The resort's own pages give slightly different cancellation windows depending on which page is read, so it is worth confirming the exact notice period when you book rather than assuming either figure, since a late change is charged in full either way.
