The one thing

The Woodland Retreat takes one person at a time. It is a former storehouse deep in the trees of the Cromlix estate, rebuilt by the Perthshire architect Fergus Purdie into a single treatment cabin, and when your booking begins the woodland spa is yours alone, with birdsong for background music and nobody else on the path.

The verdict

Cromlix is the Victorian country house outside Dunblane that Kim and Andy Murray own, a few minutes from the town where Andy grew up, and they have spent their years with it turning it into one of Scotland's most complete small luxury hotels, with five AA red stars, three AA Rosettes for the kitchen and a Michelin Key to its name. In January 2026 they closed the whole house for its biggest change yet, and it reopened on 15 May with two new restaurants, three new suites and, out in the woods, this.

The retreat itself is a small and deliberate thing. Rather than build a spa wing onto the house, Cromlix took a disused storehouse standing in its 34 acres of woodland and asked Fergus Purdie to remake it, with the interior designer Suzanne Garuda finishing the inside. The result is a cabin reached by a short walk from the main house along a forested path, wrapped in a Cromlix dry robe, and given over entirely to one guest and one therapist. The hotel's general manager has called wellness the ultimate luxury for travellers, and the shape of this spa is a genuine position on what that means, less marble and more silence.

Everything here runs on nature rather than glamour. The treatments are built around breathwork, meditation and botanical formulas from two named partners, and the grounds do the rest, with a lochan below the trees where morning mist lifts off still water, a kitchen garden feeding the restaurants, beehives, chickens, red squirrels and woodland trails in every direction. It is a spa for people who find a forest more restorative than a relaxation room, and it knows exactly who it is for, because you have to be staying at Cromlix to book it.

The water

There is no pool at Cromlix and no thermal circuit, and anyone wanting a day of moving between heat rooms should choose elsewhere in Scotland. What there is instead sits by the water itself. Deep in the woodland beside the lochan, the hotel has built a sauna and cold plunge, and it sells the pair not as a facility but as a ritual, an hour reserved privately for you and up to three others at 50 pounds. The sauna warms the walk out of your shoulders while you look at the trees, and the plunge is exactly as sharp and clarifying as cold Scottish water beside a lochan sounds, with a gentle stroll back through the woods to finish. The hotel calls it forest bathing at its most elemental, and for once the phrase is earned, because there really is nothing else out there but the trees.

Treatments

Two houses share the cabin, and both deserve naming. Bamford is the English nature led house that has been blending ancient technique with botanical skincare since 2004, and MODM is the Edinburgh born brand of siblings Jodi and Dan, whose products have been in Cromlix's bedrooms since 2023, so the partnership grew out of the house rather than being bought in.

The signature treatments run to 80 minutes at 195 pounds. The Bamford Signature Treatment opens with an Epsom salt foot ritual and moves through Japanese shiatsu, Swedish massage, a heated chakra stone resting on the abdomen and a face and Indian head massage, closing with guided yogic breathing, and the therapist shapes it around one of four routes, for stillness, energy, balance or grounding. The MODM Signature Holistic Experience begins with guided meditation and breathwork before a hand is laid, then works the whole body, face and scalp in the brand's neroli and rose blend. The Bamford Wellness Facial brings gua sha and lymphatic work to the face, neck and shoulders, and adds a head, neck and stomach massage on the fair reasoning that what shows on the face is often felt somewhere deeper. For late afternoons there is A Moment's Retreat, 50 minutes at 140 pounds, offered daily at half past five.

It is a short menu and it is meant to be, four treatments, one cabin, one guest at a time.

Getting in

The Woodland Retreat is exclusively for hotel guests, and there is no day access, no day pass and no spa day to buy. Booking is through the hotel's reservations team or at reception, ideally well ahead, because the hotel's own line is that the retreat is intimate by design and availability is limited, which with a single cabin is simple arithmetic. The sauna and cold plunge hour is reserved the same way.

Cromlix sits at Kinbuck, ten minutes by taxi from Dunblane station, which has direct services on the main lines including trains from London, and Edinburgh airport is around 45 minutes away by car. The hotel is one of the easier luxury escapes in Scotland to reach without driving, and one of the harder ones to leave.

What to know before you fall in love

• The retreat is for Cromlix hotel guests only, so a stay at the hotel is the way in and there is no day spa access of any kind.
• One guest at a time is the whole idea, which makes it glorious to have and genuinely limited to book, so treatments are worth reserving when the room is.
• There is no pool and no thermal suite, and the water offer is the sauna and cold plunge by the lochan, so this is a woodland reset rather than a spa day in a robe.
• The treatment menu is intentionally short, four treatments from two houses, and couples wanting to be treated side by side will be taking turns.
• The cabin is reached on foot through the woods, which is half the magic and worth knowing when packing shoes for a Scottish forecast.

Best for

Hotel guests who measure a spa by how quiet it is rather than how big it is, and who would choose an hour of woodland silence over a thermal circuit every time. Solo travellers, because the whole place is built around one person at a time. Cold water people, who will love a private sauna and plunge beside a lochan with nobody else in sight. And anyone celebrating something at Cromlix who wants the most personal treatment room in Scotland added to the stay.
