The one thing

Tresco Island Spa is the only spa anywhere in the Isles of Scilly, set on a privately managed island that the Dorrien Smith family has cared for across five generations, and its signature treatment turns seaweed hand harvested on the neighbouring island of St Martin's into a full body scrub, massage and facial found nowhere else in Britain.

The verdict

Getting to Tresco at all is part of the story. There is no bridge and no road, so every guest arrives by helicopter, by light aircraft with a boat transfer from St Mary's, or by ferry across open water, and that same sense of arrival carries through into the spa once you reach it. Two linked facilities share the work, the Island Spa and the Sea Garden Spa, each holding a heated indoor pool, a jacuzzi and a fitness room, with a sauna and steam room at the Island Spa and a further sauna at the Sea Garden. Two outdoor pools add seasonal swimming through the summer months, and a daily Quiet Swim gives early risers the Island Spa pool to themselves before the wider day begins.

The treatment side leans local in a way few spas can claim honestly. Alongside beyond organic products from ila, therapists work with Phoenix & Providence, an organic seaweed skincare range made by hand on St Martin's, one island over, from seaweed and sea salt gathered from the shore. A scrub, a full body massage and a facial built around that seaweed forms the signature treatment, and it sits alongside a broad menu of facials, massages and nail treatments that would not look out of place on the mainland, brought here instead to an island with its own subtropical Abbey Garden a short walk from the water.

Most of the people who use this spa are already staying on Tresco, in an Islandshare, a rental cottage, or a room at The New Inn or the Sea Garden Apartments, and for them access comes as part of the stay. Anyone visiting from elsewhere in the Isles of Scilly can sometimes book in too, though this runs on availability rather than as a standing offer, so it rewards a little advance planning by phone or email rather than a walk up.

The water

Between the two facilities sit two heated indoor pools, a jacuzzi at each, and a sauna and steam room at the Island Spa with a further sauna at the Sea Garden Spa. Two outdoor pools open through the warmer months for swimming under open sky, closing again as the season turns. None of this sets out to be a destination thermal circuit, and it does not need to. It is a well kept resort amenity built around the rhythm of an island holiday, there to be dipped into between a walk through the Abbey Garden and a look round the next cove, and the daily Quiet Swim hour gives it a calmer character first thing than most hotel pools ever manage.

Treatments

The treatment menu runs on two skincare houses. Most of the facials and body treatments come from ila, described by the spa as beyond organic and built from plants and minerals rather than synthetic chemicals. Phoenix & Providence supplies the other half, an organic seaweed skincare range made on St Martin's from seaweed and sea salt hand harvested from the shore, and its Phoenix and Providence Experience, a scrub, full body massage and facial in one longer treatment, is the closest thing this spa has to a signature. Beyond that sits a broad, familiar menu, hot stone and aromatherapy massage, an Indian head massage, warm bamboo back treatment, facials tailored to sensitivity or radiance, and a full menu of manicures, pedicures and waxing. A dedicated ila range for expectant mothers covers scrubs and massage from the second trimester on, and seasonal Wellness Breaks bring yoga and meditation into the mix across a multi night stay.

Getting in

There is no road to Tresco, so reaching the spa starts with reaching the island. Penzance Helicopters flies direct in around fifteen minutes, Skybus connects from Land's End, Newquay or Exeter to St Mary's with a short boat transfer on to Tresco, and the Scillonian ferry sails from Penzance to St Mary's in a little under three hours before the same onward boat crossing. Once there, guests staying on Tresco, whether in an Islandshare, a rental cottage, or a room at The New Inn or the Sea Garden Apartments, have access to both spa facilities as part of their stay. Visitors based elsewhere in the Isles of Scilly can occasionally book day access too, subject to availability, arranged ahead of time by phone or email rather than online, so a little planning goes a long way. Treatments run to a similar rhythm, best booked by phone or email before you travel rather than on arrival.

What to know before you fall in love

Day access for anyone not already staying on Tresco is occasional rather than a standing product, and it needs a call or an email ahead of time rather than a walk up on the day.

The wellness facilities themselves are a light, resort style set up, two heated pools, a sauna and a steam room spread across two buildings, rather than a long thermal journey with multiple rooms to move through.

Reaching Tresco at all takes a little planning, since there is no road onto the island and every route in is by helicopter, light aircraft or ferry, several of which then need a further short boat crossing.

Best for

Guests already staying on Tresco, whether in an Islandshare, a cottage or one of the island's rooms, and anyone drawn to a genuinely remote island setting alongside the subtropical Abbey Garden. Especially well suited to a longer island stay built around walking, sailing and the garden, with the spa as one part of a slower week rather than the sole reason for the trip.
